Wisdom at the Crossroads: Making Godly Decisions Like Solomon

Wisdom at the Crossroads

One day, two women came to King Solomon. One of them said:

"Your Majesty, this woman and I live in the same house. Not long ago, I gave birth to a baby at home, and three days later, she also had a baby. There was no one else in the house with us.

One night, while we were all asleep, she accidentally rolled over on her baby, and he died. Then, while I was still asleep, she got up, took my son from my bed, and placed him in hers. She then put her dead baby next to me.

In the morning, when I woke up to nurse my son, I saw that he was dead. But when I looked closely in the light, I realized he was not my child!"

"No!" the other woman interrupted. "The living baby is mine, and the dead one is yours!"

"No!" the first woman insisted. "The dead baby is yours, and the living one is mine!"

They argued in front of King Solomon until he finally said, "Both of you claim this child as your own. Bring me a sword."

A sword was brought to him, and he ordered, "Cut the baby in half! That way, each of you will have a part of him."

At this, the real mother cried out, "Please, Your Majesty, don't kill my son! I love him deeply—give him to her instead. Just let him live!"

But the other woman said, "Go ahead and cut him in half! That way, neither of us will have him."

Solomon then declared, "Do not kill the baby. Give him to the first woman—she is the true mother."

When the people of Israel heard about this judgment, they were in awe of King Solomon’s wisdom. They recognized that God had granted him divine understanding to judge fairly.

This story is taken from 1 Kings 3:16-28 in the Bible.

Making Wise Decisions at Life’s Crossroads

Solomon displayed incredible wisdom in making his decision. But when we face important choices, how do we decide wisely?

Life is full of decisions—some small, like choosing what to eat for dinner, and others life-changing, such as selecting a career, choosing where to live, or handling relationships. Every human being has made at least one poor decision. The question is: How do we choose wisely?

What criteria do we use to evaluate our choices? While gathering information and carefully analysing options are important, we also need wisdom and clarity to make choices aligned with God’s will. No decision is truly wise if made apart from Him.

God’s Guidance in Decision-Making

God provides us with wisdom, guidance, and peace through:

  • His Word – The Bible offers timeless wisdom.
  • His Spirit – The Holy Spirit leads and convicts us.
  • Godly Counsel – Seeking advice from wise and mature Christians.

By relying on these, we can make sound decisions that reflect God’s plan for our lives.

Practical Steps for Making Wise Decisions

1.     Pray for guidance and discernment.

2.     Study relevant Bible passages.

3.     Be patient and trust in God's timing.

4.     Avoid rushing into decisions; seek His direction.

5.     Seek counsel from mature Christian mentors or leaders.

6.     Listen for the Holy Spirit’s prompting.

7.     Surrender personal desires and align with God's will.

8.     Embrace uncertainty, remaining flexible in God’s hands.

9.     Pray with humility, gratitude, and persistence.

10.Trust in God and experience His inner peace.

11.Rest in the truth that God is in control.

By turning to Scripture and aligning our choices with God’s Word, we can navigate life’s crossroads with confidence and clarity.

Biblical Wisdom for Decision-Making

๐Ÿ“– "Teach me Your way, LORD, that I may rely on Your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name."Psalm 86:11

๐Ÿ“– "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."Philippians 4:6-7

๐Ÿ“– "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."Proverbs 3:5-6

๐Ÿ“– "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and He will establish your plans."Proverbs 16:3

When we seek God’s wisdom and trust in His plan, we can make faithful, wise, and God-honouring decisions.

Key Takeaways

1.   Seek God's Wisdom in Decision-Making – Just as King Solomon relied on divine wisdom, we must seek God’s guidance through prayer, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit to make wise and righteous choices.

2.  Trust in God's Plan – Life’s crossroads can be uncertain, but when we align our decisions with God’s will, seek counsel, and remain patient, He will lead us on the right path with clarity and peace.
