today you look beautiful. Who doesn’t love hearing that? Everyone enjoys
receiving compliments like this, me included. But what is real beauty?
Let’s explore a few thoughts on that.

The Beauty of the Word “Beauty”
The word
"beauty" itself is beautiful. Beauty is defined as the quality or
combination of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses
or the mind.
Different Perspectives on Feeling Beautiful
What makes
us feel beautiful? That’s a tough question because each of us interprets beauty
differently.
Some feel
beautiful when they’re comfortable and look cute. Others feel it when they
dress up, style their hair, and apply makeup. For some, it comes from working
out, showering, and wearing a nice outfit. Being physically healthy and active,
through activities like dancing or exercising, can also contribute to feeling
beautiful.
The Inner Light of Beauty
“Beauty is
not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” —Khalil Gibran
This is so
true!
There are days when we look in the mirror and don’t feel attractive, but beauty isn’t always about physical appearance.
“The Lord
does not look at the things people look at. People look at outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Struggling with My Self-Image
I lost all
my hair because of chemotherapy. My skin became tanned from radiation. My
nails, palms, and soles turned black, and I lost around 15 kilograms. White
spots appeared on my face, and I grew unwanted facial hair. You can imagine how
different I looked. No one could recognize me as Sumathi—only my voice gave me
away. I didn’t let anyone see me and isolated myself completely.
I didn’t go
out at all. When I had to visit the hospital, I would cover my head with a
scarf, wear a face mask, drape myself in a shawl, and put on black shoes. This
was how I presented myself.
When people
saw me, they would take a second look, as if they couldn’t believe it was me.
All my
physical beauty was gone. Only bones and skin remained, sustained by my breath.
But what can
I say? Am I not beautiful? Yes, I am.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful.”
“The Lord
does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward
appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
True beauty
comes from within. It is far more important than physical appearance.
The Essence of Inner Beauty
Inner beauty
is the beauty of the heart: being selfless, reliable, loving, caring, and
always willing to help, even if you don’t know the person. Inner beauty is
about one’s personality and how they treat others—it transcends physical
appearance.
As 1 Peter
3:3-4 says:
“Your beauty
should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of
gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self,
the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in
God’s sight.”
Finding Inner Beauty Through Faith and Prayer
Rejoice in
the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is
right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything
is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
This will
bring us inner beauty. It will deepen the beauty in our hearts.

As the years
pass, beauty shifts from the face to the heart.
